Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy – What and Why?

Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy – What and Why?

What is Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy?

Hormones are responsible for some of the most important functions of the body like energy, muscle tone, quality of sleep, motivation, mental clarity, libido, and overall mood. Studies have shown, balanced hormones are essential for good health and disease prevention as we age. Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) optimizes hormone levels with tiny pellets under the skin that release bio-identical estrogen and/or testosterone continuously through the bloodstream.

Patients have reported:
• Regained energy, muscle strength and a greater ability to lose weight.
• Increased mental clarity and feel younger and happier again.
• Improved quality of life while preventing age-related illness.

Why Should Women Consider BHRT?

Estrogen is the most important hormone for women; the loss of estrogen puts her at an increased risk for osteoporosis, heart disease, colon cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, impaired vision and Parkinson’s disease. The longer a woman is without estrogen, the greater her risk for serious health consequences.

Estrogen receptors are in varying organs throughout the body which is why hormonal imbalances produce a variety of symptoms such as skin elasticity, moodiness, bone shrinkage and cognitive decline. Estrogen is also thought to be a natural antidepressant and mood stabilizer. This is noticeable when estrogen levels rise in the first week of menses, their overall effect is to increase the amount of serotonin available to the brain’s nerve cells leading to an increase in mood.

The brain needs normal amounts of testosterone in balance with estrogen to produce serotonin which supports emotional balance. Furthermore, the deficiency or imbalance of testosterone can lead to muscle atrophy, osteopenia, osteoporosis and pain in the muscles and joints.

Why Should Men Consider BHRT?

Studies have shown that men begin losing testosterone at a rate of 3% to 10% per year beginning at age 30. Medical research has defined the male equivalent to menopause as andropause. Symptoms of testosterone deficiency in men may include fatigue, lack of mental clarity, loss of libido, and difficulty achieving or sustaining an erection.

Hormonal treatments for men can be expensive, require daily consumption and in many cases need to be carefully timed with their partner’s sexual needs. Bio-identical hormone pellet therapy is the only method of testosterone treatment that gives sustained and consistent testosterone levels throughout the day for four to six months without any drastic “roller coaster” blood testosterone levels.

Is BHRT Therapy for you?

If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms of hormone imbalances, such as difficulty sleeping, moody, anxious, depressed, decreased muscle strength, and reduced sexual desire, he or she might be a candidate for hormone replacement therapy.

If you are interested in BHRT, you would benefit from a consultation in our clinics. Conveniently located in Jackson and Brentwood, Tennessee, Dr. Roy Schmidt and the New Life Medical Group team can assess your needs and create a treatment plan right for you. Call us at 866-892-6262.

Recent News On Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)

Scientists reverse brain damage on a toddler – is what the headlines reads on a news video on Good Morning America, USA Today, ABC News and other media.

It is described as a medical breakthrough, as doctors use oxygen therapy to partially reverse brain damage that incurred after a two-year old child had fallen into a family pool, in Arkansas. The child was unable to talk or walk after the damage. The family turned to Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, which was applied to the child for 55 days and the results were astounding. She is now able to be alert, eat, speak and has only mild residual injury remaining.

Not A New Treatment

Although, this is not a new treatment, there hasn’t been a lot of random clinical controlled trials around the treatment. Having said that it, is a low-risk procedure which has shown positive results and many benefits.

Doctors around the country, that know and use this technique have long known about the benefits and its success capabilities.

New Life Medical Group Breakthroughs

At New Life Medical Group, we have seen our own breakthroughs and regularly receive calls from parents treating children for incidents as this, as well as adults as well.

One such story is that of a child who began HBOT, and after 40 sessions had regained the ability to speak and eat and walk. She was accepted into therapy at the Shepard Center in Atlanta for the physical therapy that helped her continue her recovery. She will go back to high school in a few weeks.

Such success stories solidify why we do what we do.

In our experience, we have learned that the sooner that treatment is applied after an injury, the better the results.

Do you Suffer from one of these Symptoms? It Could Be Diabetes

Do you Suffer from one of these Symptoms? It Could Be Diabetes

Diabetes is the condition in which the body does not properly process food for use as energy. Most of the food we eat is turned into glucose for our bodies to use for energy. The pancreas makes insulin to help glucose get into the cells of our bodies. When you have diabetes, your body either doesn’t make enough insulin or can’t use its own insulin as well as it should, which causes sugars to build up in the blood. This results in an abnormal metabolism of carbohydrates and elevated levels of glucose in your blood and urine.

Types

There are two main types of diabetes.

  • Type 1 Diabetes: The body does not produce ANY insulin.
  • Type 2 Diabetes: The body does not produce ENOUGH insulin for proper function.

Approximately 90% of patients with diabetes suffer from type 2 diabetes making it much more common than type 1.

Causes

Causes of type 1 diabetes include autoimmune, genetic, and environmental factors such as a virus. Causes of type II diabetes include older age, obesity, family history of diabetes, prior history of gestational diabetes, impaired glucose tolerance, physical inactivity, and race/ethnicity.

Symptoms

Some people, especially those with prediabetes, may not experience symptoms initially. In type 1 diabetes, symptoms tend to come on quickly and be more severe. Symptoms for type 1 or type 2 diabetes could include:

  • Increased thirst and extreme hunger
  • Frequent urination
  • Fatigue and irritability
  • Blurred vision
  • Slow-healing sores
  • Frequent infections, such as gums or skin infections and vaginal infections
  • Male sexual dysfunction
  • Weight gain or unusual weight loss
  • Numbness and tingling in hands and feet

How Can New Life Medical Group Help You?

Diabetes care is complex and requires that many issues, beyond glycemic control, be addressed. Treatment could include diet control, exercise, home blood glucose testing, and in some cases, oral medication and/or insulin. Approximately 40 percent of people with type 2 diabetes require insulin injections.

5 Benefits of Stem Cell Therapy

5 Benefits of Stem Cell Therapy

Stem cell therapy uses a patient’s own stem cells to help repair damaged tissues and repair injuries. This therapy is a part of the regenerative medicine field that is rapidly growing.  A few of the many things stem cell therapy is used for include reducing joint pain, increasing motion and flexibility, and treating tendon and ligament tears.

What is a stem cell?

Before we explain some of the benefits of this therapy, it may be helpful to know a little bit more about stem cells in general.

According to the National Institute of Health,

“Stem cells are important for living organisms for many reasons. In the 3- to 5-day-old embryo, called a blastocyst, the inner cells give rise to the entire body of the organism, including all of the many specialized cell types and organs such as the heart, lungs, skin, sperm, eggs and other tissues. In some adult tissues, such as bone marrow, muscle, and brain, discrete populations of adult stem cells generate replacements for other cells that are lost through normal wear and tear, injury, or disease.”

Benefits

With so many treatment options out there, you may be wondering what benefits choosing stem cell therapy provides.  Overall, because stem cell therapy utilizes biologic material harvested directly from the patient’s body, the general benefits include minimal risk, minimal recovery time and minimal worry.  Here are 5 more specific benefits to be aware of.

Avoid surgery and its many complications and risks

Stem cell therapy is a minimally invasive, non-surgical procedure. The stem cells are harvested from the patient’s bone marrow from the iliac crest (pelvis).

Minimal post-procedural recovery time

One of the most time consuming factors of any injury is not always the treatment itself, but actually the recovery time. With stem cell therapy, recovery time is minimal.

No use of general anesthesia

Do you not like the way general anesthesia makes your feel? Or do you simply get anxious at the thought of being put under? Stem cell therapy may be just what you need as it does not require the use of general anesthesia.

No risk of rejection

Due to using biologics extracted from the patient, there is no risk of rejection.

No communicable disease transmission

As the cells originate within your own body, there is no risk of spreading disease from or to another person.

Tips to Avoid Neck Pain from Sleeping

Tips to Avoid Neck Pain from Sleeping

Your neck may be small, but it’s a crucial component of a healthy body and overall wellness. Symptoms of neck pain can include numbness, stabbing or shooting pain, inability to turn one’s head regularly, and migraines or headaches.  Neck pain is a result of cervical spine pressure or tension, nerve irritation or inflammation. Take note of what limitations you have with your neck pain and/or where the pain is centralized. The neck is an integral part in supporting and mobilizing the head, so it’s important that it is attended to before the condition worsens.

Most neck pain conditions heal within a few days or weeks, but sometimes the damage may need more than just a bit of rest and an ice-pack. This is most likely dependent on the cause of neck pain. One of the causes of neck pain is sleeping in an unusual position. Check out the below tips to avoid neck pain from sleeping.

Find the best pillow height.

It is important to find a pillow that supports the natural curve of your neck when you lie down to sleep. If your pillow is too low, you risk straining your neck. If your pillow is too high, you are also at risk of straining your neck and obstructing your breathing.

If you are a back sleeper, a thin pillow is your best option. Side sleepers need a thicker pillow to ensure that their head is in the middle of their shoulders. The height and width of your shoulder will determine the exact thickness. Sleeping on your stomach is the most detrimental position for your neck. If you must sleep on your stomach, you will need a very thin pillow or perhaps no pillow at all.

Put your phone away.

Checking your phone at night, even if just for a few minutes, can cause neck pain. When you look at your phone in bed, you may tilt your head up to 60 degrees. This angle strains your neck muscles, tendons and ligaments. Another negative about looking at your phone in bed is that the light your phone emits can actually block your body’s release of melatonin. This makes it harder to fall asleep.

Stretch your neck.

If you work at a desk all day, the strain from slouching or poor posture can cause neck pain. This pain can persist throughout your sleep. Stretching your neck before going to sleep can help loosen tight muscles from a stressful day
